IUSS Pavia: the graduate school combining cognitive sciences, seismic risk and law in Pavia
IUSS is the Graduate School of Pavia, an elite institution integrating cognitive sciences and neurosciences, seismic and natural risk engineering, social sciences and law. With full scholarships, 25% international students and a campus in the medieval Palazzo del Broletto of Pavia.

IUSS: cognitive sciences, seismic risk and law in Italy's oldest university city
The IUSS — Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori di Pavia is a state Graduate School founded in 1997, part of the Italian system of elite schools alongside the Scuola Normale of Pisa and Sant'Anna. Based in the Palazzo del Broletto, a historic medieval building in central Pavia, IUSS offers advanced training pathways in three interdisciplinary areas: cognitive sciences and neurosciences, seismic and natural risk engineering and sciences, technology and institutions.
IUSS's most distinctive area of excellence is seismic and natural risk engineering: in a country like Italy — one of Europe's most seismically active — training experts in seismic risk assessment, civil protection and emergency management is a strategic priority. IUSS has partnerships with Italian Civil Protection, INGV and European geophysics institutes. Cognitive sciences — uniting psychology, neuroscience, philosophy of mind and computer science — are the other recognised strength.
IUSS admits a limited number of students per year — selected by competition — offering scholarships covering university fees and personal expense contributions. 25% of students are international. The position in Pavia — one of Italy's oldest and most beautiful university cities, 35 km from Milan — and the connection with the University of Pavia (founded 1361) create a very high-quality academic ecosystem.

From 1997 to seismic risk: IUSS and the excellence mission in university Pavia
The IUSS of Pavia was born in 1997 as a graduate school affiliated with the University of Pavia — one of Italy's oldest, founded in 1361 — with the mission of offering the best students a complementary advanced training pathway alongside the ordinary degree course. The model draws on the Pisa graduate schools, but with a stronger vocation towards applied sciences and risk.
The choice to specialise in seismic risk was strategic and visionary: Italy is one of Europe's most seismically vulnerable countries, and training experts capable of assessing, preventing and managing seismic risk is a national priority. The tragedies of Irpinia (1980), Umbria (1997), Abruzzo (2009) and central Italy (2016) confirmed the importance of this specialisation.
Today IUSS is recognised as a national reference for cognitive sciences training — in collaboration with the Psychology Department and neuroimaging centres of the University of Pavia — and for seismic risk engineering, with partnerships with EUCENTRE (European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering), also based in Pavia.
