The Rome Global Gateway's history

The University of Notre Dame's presence in Rome dates back to 1969, when the American university decided, in a then-bold move, to make a third year of study in the Italian capital mandatory for all undergraduate Architecture students, within the school's five-year program. The idea behind this decision was that direct immersion in classical and vernacular Roman architecture represented an irreplaceable formative experience for future architects.

Fifty years later, Architecture students continue to live, draw and study in Rome every year. In 2001 the program also opened up to students from other majors, gradually expanding its mission. The Rome Global Gateway, in its current form, officially opened in 2014, after the construction of the new building on Via Ostilia, marking a turning point in the university's internationalization strategy.

Two years later, Notre Dame International and the Gateway launched the Rome International Scholars Program, dedicated to undergraduate students particularly drawn to research and academic study.
