All non-EU students residing abroad must complete pre-enrolment on Universitaly, even if:

• the university is private

• the programme is fee-based

• admission has already been granted directly by the university

• the course is taught in English

The public/private distinction does not affect the obligation of the procedure.

Why is it mandatory even for private universities?

Because Universitaly is not a university tool, but a State platform of the Italian government.
It is required to:

• authorize entry into Italy for study purposes

• link the student to the competent Italian Embassy or Consulate

• officially validate the chosen university and programme

Without Universitaly, the Consulate cannot issue a study visa, even if the student already holds an admission letter from a private Italian university.

The procedure is mandatory for:

• non-EU students residing abroad

• students enrolling in Italian public or private universities

• applicants to:

  • Bachelor’s degrees

  • Master’s degrees

  • Single-cycle degree programmes

  • First- and Second-level university Master’s programmes

It is not required for:

• EU citizens

• non-EU students who are already legally resident in Italy

Private universities often schedule admissions earlier, but Pre-registration at Universitaly remains mandatory and must be completed within the official ministerial deadlines.

• valid passport

• final academic qualification

• official transcript of records

• official translation of the qualification

• Declaration of Value or CIMEA statement (if required)

After completing the registration, log in to the student reserved area. From this section, you will be able to start the pre-enrolment process, upload the required documents, and track the progress of your application.

The personal area is the single reference point for the entire procedure, where all steps and updates related to your pre-enrolment are managed.

Within the student reserved area, select the option dedicated to pre-enrolment for international students. At this stage, you officially declare your intention to study in Italy and initiate the procedure required for the study visa.

This is a formal and essential step that links the student to the chosen university and to the competent Italian consular authorities.

During the application, you will need to select the Italian university (public or private), the degree programme or university Master, and the level of study.

This choice is crucial, because in most cases only one pre-enrolment is allowed per academic year, and it is the programme officially communicated to the Italian Embassy or Consulate for visa purposes.

At this stage, you must enter your personal information and academic details with extreme care, including your personal data, previous qualification, and the educational system of origin.

All information must exactly match the data shown on your passport and official documents, to avoid discrepancies that could delay or block the procedure.

You must select the Italian Embassy or Consulate competent for your country of residence. This choice is crucial, as it will be the office that automatically receives the approved pre-enrolment and handles your study visa application.

An incorrect selection at this stage may cause significant delays in the visa process.

Universitaly allows you to upload all required documents in digital format, including your passport, academic qualification, official translations, certifications, and university admission letter.

All files must be clear, complete, and consistent with the information provided. Incomplete or incorrect documents may result in requests for additional information, causing delays in the process.

After carefully reviewing all the entered data and uploaded documents, you can officially submit your pre-enrolment application. Once submitted, the application becomes visible to the chosen university, which can then proceed with its evaluation.

From this moment on, you will no longer be able to freely modify the submitted information, so it is essential to ensure everything is accurate before sending.

By accessing your personal reserved area, you can check the status of your pre-enrolment at any time: under evaluation, approved, or pending additional documents.

Once approved by the university, the application is automatically forwarded to the Italian Embassy or Consulate, allowing you to proceed with the study visa application.
