    From 1978 to the Gulf of Trieste: SISSA and Italy's most international science hub

    SISSA was founded in 1978 in Trieste on the initiative of a group of Italian theoretical physicists — including Paolo Budinich — who wanted to create an international doctoral school of excellence in Italy. The choice of Trieste was not coincidental: the city already hosted the ICTP founded by Abdus Salam (Nobel Prize in Physics 1979), and its position at the border between Italy, Slovenia and Croatia made it naturally international.

    Over the years SISSA expanded its offering from theoretical physics to mathematics and neuroscience, always maintaining scientific rigour as its founding value.
