UNIVPM: the leading technical-scientific university of the Central Adriatic area

Polytechnic University of Marche is the leading technical-scientific university in the Marche region, located in Ancona, the regional capital overlooking the Adriatic Sea. With around 16,000 students and 55 degree programmes specialised in engineering, medicine, economics, agriculture and natural sciences, UNIVPM ranks 2nd in the CENSIS 2025–2026 ranking among medium-sized state universities, with a score of 92.2/100 (jointly with the University of Udine) — an excellent result that rewards facilities, student services and employability.

The Faculty of Engineering is the beating heart of the university: programmes in mechanical, electronic, computer, biomedical, management and naval engineering — the latter closely connected with the Port of Ancona, Italy’s second passenger port, and with the Adriatic shipbuilding industry — train highly sought-after professionals. In industrial and computer engineering, the employability rate of master’s graduates exceeds 90%.

The Faculty of Medicine and Surgery works in synergy with the Ospedali Riuniti University Hospital of Ancona, one of the main healthcare centres in Central Italy. 6% of enrolled students are international, supported by solid Erasmus+ agreements. The overall employability rate is 80%.

Ancona is a medium-sized city overlooking the Adriatic, with a lively port, a historic centre of Greek and medieval origin, and a high quality of life. The Marche region — hills, medieval villages, the Adriatic Sea and the Apennines — is one of Italy’s most beautiful landscapes.

From 1969 to CENSIS leadership: technical excellence born with the Marche economic miracle

Polytechnic University of Marche was founded in 1969 as the University of Ancona, in response to the growing industrialisation of the Marche region during Italy’s economic miracle. The Marche area was characterised by a dense network of small and medium-sized enterprises — footwear, furniture, household appliances — that required specialised engineers and technical professionals.

By adopting the name “Politecnica delle Marche” in 2003, the university emphasised its technical-scientific vocation. During the 1980s and 1990s, it had already expanded its academic offer with medicine, economics and food sciences, building advanced laboratories and partnerships with outstanding Marche companies — Elica, Lube, Indesit.

Collaborations with Marche-based companies have made the university a strategic partner in regional industrial development. Today, UNIVPM is recognised as one of the best technical universities in Central Italy, with excellent graduate employment outcomes and a CENSIS score that places it at the top nationally in its category.
