From 1859 to automotive and aerospace: 160 years of Italian engineering in Turin

The Politecnico di Torino was founded in 1859, during the Risorgimento, as the 'School of Application for Engineers'. Italy urgently needed engineers to build the railways, bridges and infrastructure of the new unified state, and the Politecnico di Torino responded with rigorous technical training.

During Turin's industrial boom — from the late nineteenth century through the early twentieth — PoliTo became the main source of technical talent for FIAT (founded 1899), Lancia, Olivetti and all the great Piedmontese industries. Aviation pioneer Gianni Caproni and architect Carlo Mollino are among the university's most celebrated alumni.

In the twenty-first century, the Politecnico di Torino has accelerated its international trajectory, rising over 100 positions in QS to become one of the world's top 300 technical universities, with a research and innovation ecosystem recognised across Europe in aerospace, automotive and energy sustainability.
