The name 'Magna Graecia' is a tribute to Calabria's ancient history as the heart of ancient Magna Graecia — the southern Italian region colonised by Greeks in the 8th-6th centuries BC — the land of philosophers, mathematicians and scientists such as Pythagoras, who founded his celebrated school in Croton.
During the 2000s the university developed the 'Mater Domini' University Hospital, building a research and treatment centre of reference for all of southern Calabria.
