From 1290 to the Marche of the third millennium: seven centuries of humanistic knowledge in the heart of central Italy
The University of Macerata was founded in 1290 with papal recognition from Pope Nicholas IV, becoming one of central Italy's oldest university centres. The tradition of excellence in legal and humanistic sciences has been maintained for over seven centuries, through the Papal States, the Risorgimento and the twentieth century.
In the second half of the twentieth century UniMC expanded its offering to include education sciences, psychology and languages, always maintaining its humanistic vocation as the defining thread. The small size of the university has always guaranteed a privileged student-faculty relationship, a characteristic reflected in teaching quality.
In the 2000s UniMC invested in its international dimension, forging agreements with European, African and Latin American universities. The 7% foreign student proportion is a significant result for such a small university in a medium-sized Marche village.
