The University of Trieste was founded in 1924, just three years after Trieste was annexed to Italy following the First World War. Its foundation was both a cultural and political act, intended to strengthen the Italian presence in a multicultural city that for centuries had lived under Habsburg rule.
Trieste’s scientific tradition is deep and well rooted: the city was an important centre of scientific thought in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the 1960s, Nobel Prize winner Abdus Salam founded the ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics) in Trieste, transforming the city into one of the world’s leading scientific hubs and opening the doors of science to researchers from developing countries.
