The University of Trieste is one of Italy’s most international state universities, thanks to the city’s extraordinary geographical position — at the crossroads of the Latin, Slavic and Germanic worlds — and to the presence in its territory of world-class scientific institutions such as SISSA, ICTP and Elettra Sincrotrone. Around 37 programmes are available in English (source: Cineca).

The School of Physics is one of its historic strengths: researchers in Trieste are active in particle physics, condensed matter physics and astrophysics, in close collaboration with the major laboratories based in the city. Naval and industrial engineering is another area of excellence, linked to the shipbuilding tradition of the Port of Trieste — Italy’s second-largest port by freight traffic. The employability rate is 78%.

Trieste is a city of extraordinary Central European charm: historic cafés, Miramare Castle, the crystal-clear gulf, the Karst woods and an intense cultural life make it one of Italy’s most fascinating and stimulating university settings.

From 1924 to a European scientific hub: one hundred years of research in Trieste

The University of Trieste was founded in 1924, just three years after Trieste was annexed to Italy following the First World War. Its foundation was both a cultural and political act, intended to strengthen the Italian presence in a multicultural city that for centuries had lived under Habsburg rule.

Trieste’s scientific tradition is deep and well rooted: the city was an important centre of scientific thought in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the 1960s, Nobel Prize winner Abdus Salam founded the ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics) in Trieste, transforming the city into one of the world’s leading scientific hubs and opening the doors of science to researchers from developing countries.

In the 1970s and 1980s, with the creation of SISSA (International School for Advanced Studies) and the strengthening of ICTP, Trieste consolidated its role as a scientific ecosystem unique in Italy. The University of Trieste is a key component of this system, with active collaborations in theoretical physics, neuroscience and materials science, and a growing presence in European and international research networks.
