The Uninettuno International Telematic University was founded in 2004, as an evolution of the Interuniversity Consortium for Information Technologies (UNINETTUNO) which had been developing distance learning platforms for Italian and foreign universities for years. Founder Maria Amata Garito had an ambitious vision: not a simple Italian online university, but a genuinely international distance institution capable of reaching students throughout the Mediterranean and the Arab world.
In subsequent years, Uninettuno developed partnerships with universities in Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey and with international organisations such as UNESCO, building distance learning programmes in Arabic and French that attracted students from Arab and Mediterranean countries. This international positioning differentiated it sharply from other Italian online universities.
Today Uninettuno is the Italian online university with the greatest international vocation, with agreements with dozens of foreign institutions and a multinational student body approaching the model of Anglo-Saxon open universities. Its model has been studied and replicated in several Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries.
