The Scuola Superiore Meridionale (SSM) is a new state Graduate School founded in 2019 in Naples, affiliated with the University of Naples Federico II. Explicitly conceived as the Mezzogiorno's answer to the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa and Scuola Sant'Anna, the SSM is the most ambitious project for creating a doctoral excellence hub in southern Italy. It offers fully funded doctoral fellowships in natural and physical sciences, engineering and applied sciences, humanities and social sciences and cultural heritage.
The SSM received major funding from the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) as part of initiatives for university excellence in the South. Its strategic objective is twofold: train the Mezzogiorno's best researchers and retain them in Italy — reversing the brain drain — and attract talented international researchers to Naples. 40% of students are international, an exceptional figure for such a young school.

The Scuola Superiore Meridionale was born in 2019 from a visionary project by the University of Naples Federico II, with the explicit aim of creating in the Mezzogiorno an institution comparable to the great graduate schools of northern Italy and the best European graduate schools. The choice of Naples was not coincidental: as Italy's third city and historic capital of the South, Naples possesses the infrastructure, cultural heritage and critical mass to host an institution of this level.
PNRR (European National Recovery and Resilience Plan) funding gave the SSM the resources to rapidly expand its offering and attract internationally renowned faculty and researchers. Partnerships with institutions such as the Max Planck Institute, CNR and leading European universities attest to the ambition of this new institution.
