The University of Calabria was founded in 1972 on the proposal of sociologist Beniamino Andreatta — later Italy's economics minister — with a radically innovative concept for the time: an American-style university campus in southern Italy, self-sufficient, modern and oriented towards quality scientific research. The choice to build the campus ex novo at Arcavacata di Rende — on a hill of the Sila Piccola — was visionary.
During the 1970s and 1980s UniCal became a model of university innovation in the Mezzogiorno, with a strong scientific vocation and a campus that progressively developed into one of Italy's most extensive. The early investment in computer engineering proved particularly far-sighted.
Today UniCal is the main academic hub of northern Calabria and an engine of economic and cultural development for the region.
