The University of Sassari was founded in 1562 by the Jesuits, who obtained papal recognition for the Collegium Sassarense. It is one of the oldest academic institutions of the Spanish Crown of Aragon still in existence, and among the oldest in Sardinia.
Following the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773, the university was reorganised under state management. During the nineteenth century it became progressively specialised in medicine and law. In the twentieth century it expanded its offer with agricultural sciences, economics and humanities, forging close ties with the agropastoral fabric of northern Sardinia.
Research in traditional agro-zootechnics and sustainable management of natural resources has produced original programmes reflecting the productive vocation of the Sardinian territory.
