Curriculum

The programme offers advanced training in sustainable mountain agriculture, with particular attention to smart technologies, resource management and multifunctional agriculture. In the first two semesters, students take courses in sustainable agriculture, resource management and the fundamentals of agricultural engineering, which form the common foundation. The third semester instead offers elective courses in agricultural planning, specialised agronomy of mountain crops and advanced digitalisation, making it possible to steer the study plan towards one's own professional interests. Mountain agriculture presents specific challenges, linked to slopes, climate, land fragmentation and landscape protection. The programme addresses them by showing how sensors, automation and digital tools can improve the efficiency of farms without compromising the environmental balance and the cultural value of the territory.

Teaching is organised over four semesters, full time, at the Bolzano campus and in English, with a substantial share of courses taught in a foreign language and with the involvement of international faculty. Students have the option of spending a semester at the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria, thanks to exchanges with partner universities, and of carrying out an optional internship abroad. The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis, an advanced research project that allows students to explore a specific topic in depth and to demonstrate the skills they have acquired. The international approach and the contact with the Alpine territory make the experience particularly well suited to those who want to take on the challenges of mountain agriculture in a European context. The learning experience is further enriched by collaborations with partner universities and by the university's multicultural environment, which encourages the exchange of ideas and agricultural practices from both Alpine and non-Alpine contexts.

The aim is to prepare agronomists, researchers, consultants and managers in the agricultural, forestry and environmental sectors, able to use digital tools and innovative methods to manage agricultural systems in mountain areas sustainably. Professional opportunities include employment with public institutions, private companies, international organisations and NGOs, with a focus on rural planning and innovative agricultural systems. The programme is therefore designed for graduates interested in combining productivity, landscape protection and the safeguarding of natural resources, contributing to the development of mountain territories that are resilient, competitive and attentive to climate change. Graduates are suited to supporting farms and forestry businesses, planning bodies and research institutions, helping to make mountain supply chains more competitive and resilient in the face of climate change and market transformations. A good knowledge of English is useful for following the programme.
