Courses in Urban Planning

Urban planning is the discipline that plans the growth and transformation of cities and territories, balancing housing, productive, environmental and social needs. Master's programmes in Urban Planning train professionals able to develop plans, projects and policies for more sustainable, accessible and inclusive cities, at a time when urban regeneration, land consumption and climate adaptation are central issues.

The programmes include urban planning, urban design, urban regeneration, sustainable mobility, housing and housing policy, participatory planning, cartography and GIS, planning and building regulations, strategic environmental assessment, smart cities, public space and landscape, and planning for tourism and historic heritage. Lessons combine theory, design workshops, territorial analysis and case studies in Italian and European cities.

A master's in Urban Planning lets you develop skills in analysing urban contexts, drafting plans and variants, designing public space, using digital analysis and simulation tools, assessing the impact of transformations and managing participatory processes with citizens and stakeholders. You learn to work in teams with architects, engineers, landscape architects and administrators.

Career opportunities include urban planner, land-use planner, urban designer, mobility expert, head of technical and planning offices in local authorities, urban regeneration consultant, GIS expert, environmental assessment expert and researcher. Opportunities exist in municipalities, regions, architecture and planning firms, engineering companies, real estate companies, development agencies and international organisations. Practising some activities requires registration with specific professional registers.

Projects linked to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, the regeneration of brownfield areas and sustainable mobility are fuelling growing demand for up-to-date urban planning skills.

Many programmes offer internships at firms and administrations, useful for working on real cases and building professional contacts.
