Curriculum
The master is dedicated to the design of the atmosphere of spaces, that is, the set of sensory and emotional qualities that characterise an environment. The programme is based on sensory design, neuroscience, behavioural psychology, digital media and space design, and introduces an approach that considers light, colour, materials, sound and technologies as integrated elements. The aim is to develop the ability to design sensory and performative spaces, for domestic, public and urban settings, combining technological innovation with aesthetic and sensory sensitivity, in a perspective attentive to people's well-being and experience. Attention to the atmosphere of a space, that is, to the overall experience that light, colours, materials, sounds and technologies produce on those who inhabit it, responds to a growing demand for environments that improve people's well-being and behaviour, in residential, commercial, cultural and urban settings.
The master lasts 12 months and is delivered in person in Milan, at the Department of Design of the Polytechnic University. Teaching includes classroom lessons, lab workshops, off-site exercises with companies, international study trips, competitions, participation in design week and internships. This variety of activities makes it possible to test the skills acquired straight away and to come into contact with professional realities in the sector. The credits, total hours, calendar and number of places are not stated. For admission an academic diploma or a bachelor's or master's degree is required, including one obtained abroad if considered equivalent. The off-site activities and international study trips make it possible to observe good practice and to engage with designers and companies in the sector, while participation in the Milan design week offers a privileged setting in which to present ideas, learn about product innovations and build professional relationships.
The aim is to train designers with up-to-date preparation in the quality of interior spaces. Career opportunities concern architecture firms, design companies, communication agencies and entrepreneurial activities in the field of space design. The reference figures include the interior architect, the interior designer, the colour and materials expert, the event designer and the public space designer. The master is aimed at those who wish to specialise after a basic education in architecture, design or related disciplines and want to add to their design tools skills linked to perception and sensory experience. The integration of neuroscience, psychology and digital design is an innovative feature, because it makes it possible to base design choices on a better understanding of perception and behaviour, and to engage with other professional figures involved in the design of spaces, including architects, technologists and communicators.
