Key features
Admissions
Admission to this master's degree requires a bachelor's degree (first-level degree) or an equivalent qualification, with a basic background in computer science or related disciplines. The assessment criteria, deadlines, documentation and required level of English are set by the university in its annual call for applications, which should be read carefully before submitting an application.
The tuition fee is €1,200 per year, VAT exempt, for a total of approximately €2,400 over the whole two years. The Office for the Right to Education of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano awards scholarships and accommodation places. The page consulted does not indicate a start date for classes.
Curriculum
The programme offers advanced training in software engineering applied to information systems. The content includes both foundational knowledge and advanced software engineering skills, with a particular emphasis on artificial intelligence-based tools, such as the latest-generation coding assistants, on software reliability and on sustainable development. Students learn to manage the entire life cycle of IT solutions, from requirements analysis to design, from implementation to customisation and maintenance, with constant attention to quality and security. Students engage with techniques for designing robust software architectures, testing and verifying systems and assessing their reliability, learning to use in a critical and responsible way the artificial intelligence tools that are changing the way code is developed.
Teaching is spread over two years of full-time study, for a total of 120 ECTS credits, and uses English in an international environment, in which about half of the faculty come from abroad. The curriculum is divided into three components: 60 credits of compulsory courses, covering the fundamentals and advanced topics of the discipline; 24 credits of elective and free-choice courses, including algorithms for parallel computing, responsible software engineering and entrepreneurship; and 36 credits devoted to the internship and thesis, which offer professional experience and opportunities for empirical research. The multicultural classroom and the internships at international companies, including abroad, complete an offering designed to bring students into contact with software development practices used worldwide and with real problems posed by businesses. The professional experience included in the curriculum is a direct bridge to the business world, while the thesis makes it possible to carry out empirical research on current topics, such as software quality and the impact of new technologies on development processes.
The aim of the programme is to train software engineers able to develop intelligent, highly reliable solutions, in contexts ranging from ICT to industry, from automotive to cyber-physical systems, where software is now a critical component of products and services. The programme is suited to graduates in computer science, information engineering or related disciplines who wish to become designers and developers of complex software, responsible for architectures and systems that integrate data, artificial intelligence and automation. The skills acquired also make it possible to go on to research or to take on roles of technical and organisational responsibility in development teams. Employability is broad: graduates can find positions in software houses, industrial companies, automotive firms and IT consulting companies, or continue their studies with a PhD.
